California Recycling
California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) provied grant assistance and technical guidance to Santa Barbara County in 2019 to rebuild Ortega Ridge Road with more than 80,000 recycled tires after being shredded and processed into Tire-Derived Aggregate (TDA). Unlike regular soil this permeable fill material allows water to drain through which helps avoid excess weight that causes road washaways.
This is great news for recycling 51 million waste tires generated in California every year.
Benefist of this recycling include:
- Permeable and lightweith backfill
- Possible reduction to train noise when it is used under tracks.
- Helping with landslides prone retaining walls and also reducing the need for too much steel reinforcement.
- The high porosity of TDA is a good material for filling landfill gas collection trenches.
CalRecycle's Tire-Derived Aggregate Grant Program helps use of recycled waste tires in place of conventional construction materials for retaining wall backfill, landslide stabilization, vibration mitigation, and other landfill uses.
- CalRecycle has awarded $5,582,126 in TDA grants, since 2011.
- The $1.75 fee consumers pay on each new tire purchased in California helps fund these grants.
