It all begins with reducing the amount of energy an products that you consume. One of the benefits you will find when you conserve energy and cut back on your product consumption is that you save money. Instead of running your AC all day, only use it when you really need it, or shave a couple of degrees off of the thermostat setting. When you go grocery shopping, consider buying bulk items that use less packaging. You should also invest in reusable grocery bags so that you don’t end up coming home with plastic bags that will end up in a landfill.
Buying organic foods when you shop is another way to go green. If you live in or around a larger city, there is a pretty good chance that there will be numerous farmers markets at your disposal. Local growers will go there to sell their wares, allowing you to eat food that is better for you and support the local community in the process. Try to find a place that is within walking or biking distance, as this will allow you to keep the car in the garage, which is another way to save energy.
When it comes to recycling, most waste management companies are already on board. You should contact the company that collects your trash and ask them what recycle programs they have available. Chances are they will have a curbside pickup, with some even going as far as to supply you with recycle bins for your goods. You may be asked to separate plastic, paper, and metal products that are commonly used in the home, but again, that is not something that really requires an awful lot of effort on your part.
When it comes time to replace the appliances in your home, make sure to choose those that are labeled as being energy efficient. The same thing can be done with your light bulbs, and while the energy saving bulbs may be a little more expensive, you will find that they generally last a good deal longer, whilst using less energy in the process. These are just a few simple steps you can take in your efforts to go green and recycle. Once you get in the habit and see the benefit, you will quickly find a host of other ways to reduce your carbon footprint.
