Tips for Donating Your Car or Vehicle
Find a worthy charity, do your homework specially if the charity you usually donate to does not take cars.
Make sure the charity you have chosen in Massachusetts is IRS approved so your deduction is tax-deductible. You can find out more information at the IRS site or by readin publication 78 provided by IRS on this subject. You can download a copy of this publication on IRS site by searchig for it.
Once you have selected a charity see if you can drop your car off yourself, your good deed goes a long way since the charity has to pay fees to third parties to pickup the car.
In order to protect yourself from any liabilities or future parking tickets in Massachusetts, transfer the title to the charity and inform the local Massachusetts DMV of the transfer.
Make sure you have proper documentation of your donation if the car value or the value of your donation exceeds $500 then you will need to document it by filling IRS tax form 8283 and for amounts over $5,000 you will need to get an appraisal for the value of your donation. Most usually you can find the value of your car by checking the Kelley Blue Book, the values of car might be slightly different in Massachusetts but in general it is based on age and mileage and condition of the car. And for cars that are worth more than $500 IRS might require a proof from the charity to show how much they got for the car. So be sure to ask for these documents when you make your donation.
